Introduction
Memory Jar helps you collect memories into digital jars, seal them until a date you choose, and read them back on that date. It works without accounts, tracking, analytics, advertising, or any developer-side storage of what you write.
This policy was updated for version 3.0, which redraws the jar, adds Draw a Slip for jars you have already opened, and reminds you to make a backup. Version 3.0 collects nothing new, sends nothing new and asks for no new permission. Version 2.0 added voice memories, encrypted backups, shared jars and gift jars.
Information We Do Not Collect
This app does not collect personal information. Specifically, the developer does not collect:
- Name, email address, phone number, or physical address
- Contact list or address book data
- Photos, audio, or other media from your device
- Precise or approximate location data
- Financial account information or payment card information
- Advertising identifiers or device identifiers used for tracking
- Analytics, crash reports, or behavioural data
- Any of the memories, jars, photos or recordings you create
There is no server belonging to this app. The app makes no network requests at all except to Apple, when you make or restore a purchase.
Information Stored Locally on Your Device
Memory Jar stores the following on your device and nowhere else: the jars you create, the memories you write, any photo or voice recording you attach to a memory, the prompt a memory was written against, opening dates, reminder settings, jar styles, and a name you may optionally enter for use in shared jars. It also keeps a few small settings of its own: the date of your last backup and how many memories it held (so it can tell you when a fresh backup would help), whether you postponed that reminder, and which app version last showed Apple's rating prompt. None of it is transmitted to the developer.
If you enter a name in Settings or when sharing a jar, it is stored on your device and is only ever written into a file that you personally choose to send to someone. It is optional and can be left blank.
App Permissions
Memory Jar requests two permissions. Both are optional, and both are asked for at the moment they are needed rather than during onboarding.
Notifications. Used to tell you a jar is ready to open and to send occasional reminders to add a memory. Notification text never contains anything from inside a jar. Declining this does not restrict any other feature.
Microphone. Requested only if you choose to record a voice memory, and only when you tap Record. Audio is recorded on the device, stored on the device, and sealed into the jar. It is never transcribed, never analysed, and never uploaded. No speech recognition of any kind runs over it. Declining this leaves written memories and photos fully available.
Photos you attach are chosen by you through the system photo picker, which gives the app only the image you selected. The app has no access to your photo library beyond that.
Shake to draw. In a jar you have already opened, you can shake your iPhone to draw a memory at random. This uses the standard iOS shake gesture; the app does not read motion sensors, and nothing about the movement is recorded or stored. It is never active for a jar that is still sealed.
Files You Choose to Send
Nothing leaves your device unless you create a file and send it yourself. There are four such files, and each one is created only by an explicit action you take:
- Export — a PDF or plain text copy of a jar you have already opened.
- Invite — an invitation asking someone to add memories to a jar you own. It carries the jar's name, cover and opening date, and never the memories already inside it.
- Contribution — the memories you added to someone else's jar, sent back to them.
- Gift — a whole jar you filled for someone else, handed over sealed.
Invite, contribution and gift files are encrypted with AES-GCM and cannot be read by any app other than Memory Jar. That is not the same as being safe from a determined attacker who has both the file and the app, so send them through a channel you trust. Exports are deliberately not encrypted, because the point of an export is that you can open and keep it.
Once you hand a file to the share sheet, where it goes is governed by whichever app or service you send it through, not by Memory Jar.
Backups
Memory Jar can create a single encrypted backup file containing every jar on the device, including photos and voice memories. It is sealed with a passphrase you choose, stretched using PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA256 and used to encrypt the contents with AES-GCM.
That passphrase is never stored anywhere, never transmitted, and is not recoverable. Nobody can open the backup without it, including the developer. If you lose the passphrase, the backup cannot be opened by anyone. The backup file is yours; the app does not upload it and does not know where you put it.
Payments and Purchases
Memory Jar Premium is a one-time purchase processed by Apple through the App Store using StoreKit. The developer does not receive, process, or store payment card information. Whether you have purchased is determined by asking Apple directly; it is not stored as a flag the app could be tricked into setting.
Third-Party Services
This app contains no third-party analytics, advertising networks, attribution services, or tracking SDKs of any kind. The only external services it uses are Apple's own platform features: local notifications, widgets, the share sheet, the photo picker, StoreKit for purchases, and Apple's standard rating prompt (shown at most once per version, after a jar is opened; Apple decides whether it appears and handles any rating you give). None of them are used for tracking or profiling.
Data Sharing
The developer does not sell, trade, rent, or share user data with third parties. There is no developer-side database of user-created content, because there is no developer-side database.
Data Deletion
You can delete a single sealed memory from inside its jar, delete an entire jar from its own screen, or use Delete All Data in Settings to remove every jar and memory from the device, including photos and recordings. Deleting the app removes all of its data from your device.
Because nothing is stored anywhere else, none of this is recoverable afterwards. If you want to keep a copy, make a backup or an export first.
Children's Privacy
This app does not knowingly collect personal information from children, or from anyone, as it does not collect personal information at all. It is designed to function without any personal data being transmitted to the developer.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
This policy is updated whenever the app's features change in a way that affects how information is handled. The revised policy is posted on this page with a new date. The version 2.0 update added the Microphone, Files You Choose to Send, and Backups sections. The version 3.0 update added the local backup-reminder and rating-prompt settings and the Shake to draw note; it introduced no new data collection.
