My jar did not open on its date

A jar becomes openable on the date you chose, but it never opens by itself — you have to tap it. That is deliberate: being walked into a year of memories without warning is not something an app should decide for you.

Open the app and the jar will be waiting on the Home screen with an Open button. If it still looks sealed, close the app fully and reopen it so it can re-check today's date.

I never got a reminder

Check Settings › Notifications › Memory Jar on your iPhone and make sure Allow Notifications is on. If notifications were declined once, iOS will not ask again — it has to be turned back on there.

Memory Jar asks for notification permission at the moment you create a jar, never during onboarding. Declining it does not restrict anything else in the app.

Reminders never contain anything from inside a jar. A nudge says it is time to add something; it never quotes what you wrote.

My widget is locked

Widgets are part of the one-time Premium unlock. If you have already paid, open the app once so it can confirm your purchase — the widget updates straight afterwards. If it still says locked, open Settings inside the app and tap Restore Purchases.

I paid but the features are locked

Open Settings inside the app and tap Restore Purchases. Make sure you are signed in to the same Apple Account you used to buy. Premium is a one-time purchase, not a subscription, and it works on every device signed in to that account.

If restoring does not work, email me with the date of purchase and I will help.

What does the free version include?

One jar at a time, with unlimited written memories in it, the full reveal on opening day, and a reminder when the day comes. Jars you have already opened move to the Archive and are kept for free, forever — they never count against the one-jar limit, so you never have to delete your history to start something new.

Premium is a one-time purchase that adds: more than one jar running at once, photo and voice memories, Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets, the occasion templates and their prompt packs, choosing your own reminder rhythm, every jar style, export as PDF or text, filling a jar together with someone, and sealing a jar as a gift.

Encrypted backups are free. Fear of losing a year of memories is a reason not to start, so charging for the cure would be the wrong trade.

Can I read a memory before the jar opens?

No, and there is no hidden way to. Once a memory is saved, it is not shown again until the jar opens — that is the entire point of the app. You can see that a memory exists, when it was added, and its emoji, and you can delete it. You cannot read or edit it early.

Filling a jar with someone else

Tap Invite Someone on a jar you own. That creates a file you send them however you like — AirDrop, Messages, email. They open it in Memory Jar, add their own memories, and send a file back, which you merge into the jar.

There is no account and no server, so sending the file is the mechanism: both of you need the app, and nothing syncs by itself. Sending the same file twice is safe — anything already added is not added again.

Joining a jar someone else made is free. Creating the invite is part of Premium.

Giving a jar as a gift

Mark a jar as a gift when you create it, or later with Seal This as a Gift. Fill it yourself, then tap Hand Over the Jar to create a file for them. It stays sealed on their phone until the opening date you chose, and your own copy stays on yours.

Accepting a gift is free. Anything you add after you have handed it over will not reach them unless you send a new file.

Where is my data?

On your iPhone, and nowhere else. There is no account and no server. The app makes no network requests except to Apple when you purchase or restore.

Because of this, nothing is synced between devices and nothing is recoverable by the developer if you delete the app.

How do I keep a copy?

Open Settings › Backup and choose a passphrase. You get a single encrypted file containing every jar, including photos and voice memories, which you save wherever you like. To restore it, open the file in Memory Jar and enter the same passphrase.

Nobody can open that file without the passphrase — not me either. If you forget it, the backup is gone. That is the honest cost of a backup nobody else can read, and it is worth choosing something you will still remember in a year.

Restoring only adds jars that are not already on the device. It never overwrites or deletes anything that is already there.

How do I delete everything?

Delete a single sealed memory from inside its jar, delete a whole jar from its own screen, or use Delete All Data in Settings to remove every jar and every memory including photos and audio. Deleting the app also removes all of its data from your device.

None of this is recoverable. There is no copy anywhere else.

Why does it want the microphone?

Only if you record a voice memory, and only at the moment you tap Record. The audio is never transcribed, never analysed and never uploaded — it goes straight into the jar. Decline it and everything else still works.

Requesting a feature

Send it to the address above. The app is deliberately small and not everything gets added, but every message is read and a lot of what is in it came from users.
