Where Was I?

Privacy Policy

Effective Date: June 23, 2026

Introduction

Where Was I? keeps your place in the shows, books, podcasts, courses and other things you are in the middle of. Everything you save stays on your iPhone. The developer does not collect it, cannot see it, and has no server for it to go to.

Information We Do Not Collect

Where Was I? has no account and no sign-up. It collects no personal data, no usage data, no analytics, no crash reports, no identifiers and no location. It contains no advertising and no third-party code. When you choose to look something up in a public catalog (see Show and Book Lookup), only what you searched for is sent to that catalog.

What Where Was I? Stores on Your Device

The titles you add, your place in each (for example season and episode, page, chapter, lesson or a timestamp), the notes and recaps you write, ratings, categories you create, reminder times, and a timeline of the places you saved. This is stored only on your iPhone, in the app's own protected storage, and is included in your iPhone's own iCloud or computer backup if you use one — exactly like any other app's data. The developer has no access to those backups.

App Permissions

Notifications — asked for only when you set a reminder on an entry or follow a show's new episodes. Reminders and new-episode alerts are scheduled on the iPhone itself; no notification is sent from a server. Where Was I? asks for no other permission: no camera, photos, location, contacts, calendar or microphone.

Widgets

Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets read your list from a storage area on your iPhone that the app shares only with its own widget, so they can show your place and move it forward. Nothing leaves the device.

Backups

You can export a backup file from Settings. The file is created on your iPhone and saved wherever you choose (for example in Files). The app never uploads it. Restoring reads a file you pick and adds what is missing; it never deletes anything.

Show and Book Lookup (TVmaze and Open Library)

When you tap Find the show or Find the book and search, the text you type is sent over an encrypted connection to TVmaze (for TV shows) or Open Library (for books) so they can return matching titles. When you pick a show, the app asks TVmaze for that show's public episode list using the show's public TVmaze number. If you switch on Tell me when new episodes air for a show (Where Was I Unlimited), the app asks TVmaze about that one show again when you open the app, at most about twice a day.

Nothing else is sent: no account, no name, no device or advertising identifier, no cookies, and none of your places, notes, ratings or list. As with any internet request, these services can see the IP address a request comes from; the developer has no access to it or to their logs. Their own terms apply: TVmaze privacy policy, Open Library (Internet Archive) terms. Nothing is looked up unless you search or follow a show, and everything else in the app works without an internet connection.

The answers (season and episode counts, episode names, the next air date, a book's author and page count) are stored only with your entry on your iPhone. TV data comes from TVmaze.com and is used under CC BY-SA 4.0.

Imports

You can import a Goodreads library export (a .csv file) from Settings. The file is read on your iPhone; it is never uploaded.

Siri and Shortcuts

If you use Siri or the Shortcuts app, Where Was I? answers on your iPhone from your own list. These requests are handled by Apple under Apple's privacy policy; the developer receives nothing.

Payments and Purchases

Where Was I Unlimited is a one-time in-app purchase handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. The developer never receives your name, Apple Account or payment details. To sell and restore the purchase, the app talks to the App Store.

Third-Party Services

The app contains no third-party code or SDKs; it uses only Apple's own frameworks. The only outside services it contacts are TVmaze and Open Library, and only as described in Show and Book Lookup.

Data Sharing

The developer collects nothing, so there is nothing to share or sell. The only data that leaves your iPhone is the search text or show number you send to TVmaze or Open Library when you look something up.

Data Deletion

Delete an entry in the app, or delete the app to remove all of its data from your iPhone. Backup files you exported are yours to delete.

Children's Privacy

The app collects no data from anyone, including children.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page with a new date.
